Unit 3/P1: Hazards in health and social care setting
Who are the individuals?
Visitors are the family, friends and volunteers.
Workers in a setting are cleaners, caterers, and administrative.
Who are those service users?
Patients, older people, people with learning disability, young people, young children, babies, those with physical disability or sensory impairment, and people with mental health problems
Setting Residential care home, hospital, day care, pre-school, infant school, child-minder, clinic surgery,
Hospital setting - Health and care setting pose many hazards .those are particular to hospitals, clinics and surgeries include the risk of microbes infecting wounds during or after surgery.

Residential care home
Residential care homes will provide accommodation, meals and personal care; such as with washing, dressing, toileting, getting up out of bed and chairs. Community nurses, such as district nurses, will carry out any of the nursing tasks that are needed.

HAZARDOUS RELATING TO THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

Wheelchairs in the corridors are a tripping hazard; to avoid this hazard the possible thing we can do is that put the wheelchairs in a corner. People who are affected by this hazard are the staff, visitors, and the residents. To avoid this hazard I would have to make sure that the wheelchairs are put away in the store room and only take them out when needed, also for resident’s safety I would ask the maintenance person to check the wheelchair if it is secure for the residents to sit in. The wheelchairs should not be hazard for anyone who walks in the nursing home.

Pad boxes in the reception are tripping hazard, top avoid this hazard I would have to make sure that they are stored in a safe place. People who are affected by this hazard are the staff, visitors and the residents. The residents are really vulnerable so we have to protect them from these types of hazards. To avoid this hazard the possible thing I can do is, store the pad boxes in the personal and hygiene store and only take them out when they are needed; also I can do a risk assessment on the pad boxes to find out that they are not a risk for anyone in the future. The potential harm and abuse the pad boxes can cause is, the person who trips over the pad boxes

HAZARDOUS EQUIPMENT

Electrical cable on the floor is a hazard. If in the care home electrical cable on the floor can electrocute someone or they could trip and fall and would cause damage with all the equipment around the care home .To reduce the risk to both staff and service user the cables should be put away or structured in a different way nowhere to be seen. Furthermore if a cable is seen or about a sign should be put on it or it should be reported.

Hoister is a hazard .for example if in care home leaves the hoister in an appropriate place like blocking fire exits is a major risk to individuals as it can cause great damage.

HAZARDOUS INFECTIONS

Medical trolleys are a hazard if left unattended as a patient could quite easily take medication that isn’t prescribed for them and it could harm their health such as taking a drug that could be for heart disease or even taking an overdose of a drug their taking or something else.

Hygiene hand washing is a hazard .for example if in a care home care assistant not washing the hand when they do personal care for service user and go to other service user out washing hand can prevent infection. Care assistant always need to wash hand and use anti-bacteria hand gel.
