Scenario:

As one of the of the government initiatives schools are being encouraged to introduce healthy eating. The supervisor of your school/college kitchen is concerned about the choices students are making from the lunch menus. They are aware of national concern about the rise in obesity in children, and want to encourage all pupils to choose ‘healthy’ options, not just ‘cake and chips’. They need a pack of materials that could be used in the school canteen and for parents and families to inform pupils about ‘wise choices’ and to help inform the staff, to enable them to give pupils information and advice when choosing their lunches.

By completing this research you will gain knowledge and develop your understanding of diets and their impact on health. It will also help you understand the importance of a balanced diet, the effects of diet on health, the dietary needs of individuals and food safety and hygiene. Learning outcomes:

1. Know dietary needs of individuals at different life stages.
2. Understand effects of unbalanced diets on the health of individuals.
3. Know specific dietary needs of service users.
4. Understand principles of food safety and hygiene.

To begin your research, the school has decided to do a project on healthy eating and ways to maintain a balanced diet. The kitchen staff at your school would like you to produce a poster identifying the components of a balanced diet to help them make better decisions about what types of food they should have on their menu.

You will be creating posters, a Wheel of life or timeline and report that will help inform the kitchen staff at schools, pupils and parents about the components of a balanced diet, the different dietary needs at different life stages and the most suitable foods to eat to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Task 1 Grading Criteria P1, P2, M1

P1- Identify the components of a balanced diet
Produce posters to be used as displays in the school canteen, which identifies the components of a balanced diet. The following terms must be referred to in your poster, with a sentence explaining what they mean:

Nutrients
Carbohydrates
Proteins
Vitamins
Fats and oils Minerals.

Posters should be appealing and pictures can also be used to identify the components of a balanced diet.

P2- Identify the different dietary needs at each life stage
Produce a wheel of life or a timeline that identifies the components of a balanced diet according to the life stage, including food sources. You must include the following:

Infancy
Childhood
Adolescence
Adulthood (including pregnancy and breastfeeding)
Old Age

You must also refer to any factors influencing the diet of individuals. For example:

Religion/culture, social class, personal preferences, peer pressure, the media, position in family, geographic location and availability of food and financial resources.

M1- Discuss how the components of a balanced diet contribute to the health of individuals at different life stages.
You are now going to add more information to your wheel of life or timeline. You must write a mini report discussing how the components of a balanced diet contribute to the health of individuals at different life stages. In your report you must refer to the following components for each life stage:

Nutrients
Carbohydrates
Proteins
Vitamins
Fats and oils Minerals.

List all of your sources in a Bibliography

The posters, wheel of life or timeline and your report will provide evidence for achieving P1, P2 and M1
