Homework Assignment #2 Toshiba Corporation, based out of Minata-ku, Tokyo, Japan, is one of the largest electronics group in the world. As an employer for CHIPCo, a company based out of the United States, developing a great relationship and doing business with Toshiba would be a great advantage if we were to land a deal that would allow us to sell our products to them. Unfortunately, prior to an important meeting to discuss payment terms, a recall on several of our products had been placed. While the timing was bad, we are very hopefully we navigate through this and continue negotiations with Toshiba. A positive note to point out first is the relationship building that had occurred over the past two months with our Japanese counterparts. This was a very important step as this allowed to be on friendlier terms rather than dealing business with strangers. Studying Japanese culture and business, they will not do negotiations with strangers and it’s often important to have things such as drinking session to further socialize and bond with whom you are dealing with. Once this bond is establish it would be much easier to talk with the Toshiba team about this dilemma that CHIPCo is facing. Preparing for this problem, we decided to focus on the quality issue instead of discussing the payment terms. This was a positive move on our part, as this showed them that we cared about what was going on and that we are prepared to fix this and improve ourselves. Their culture tends to emphasize perfection. Any product that they make will not be released until their high standards are met and we would like to do the same.
