Promote Communication in health and social care or children and young people’s setting.
1.1 – An identification of different reasons why people communicate.
In this assignment I will be looking at and explaining promoting communication in a young person’s setting and the affects that communication can have in this kind of setting. I will be explaining different reason why people communicate and why it is so important in a health and social care or a young person’s setting.
In a setting, everyone communicates in different ways and for different purposes, these can both be formal and informal. There are many different reasons why people communicate in a young people’s setting, for example; to exchange information with other staff members or to the child’s parents. This is crucial that all the staff are able to do this effectively as it could affect the child’s learning and development rate if important information about the child is not passed on to other colleagues or the child’s parents. For example, if the child has any dietary needs and that information is not passed on to all the staff, then the child could end up eating the foods that they are allergic to or are not allowed to eat.
Another reason why people communicate in a young person’s setting is to get an understanding of the person you are talking to. This is essential as it will inform you of any specific needs a child may have. Communicating with another member of staff or with a child’s parent, will give you information about what specific needs the child may have or any other issues. For example, if a child is diabetic and they need to have insulin injections, it is crucial that all the staff know when the child needs it and where it has to be injected. This will ensure you know important information about the child who is in your care.
People also communicate to gain relationships with others. For example, practitioners would communicate effectively with children in an informal manner to gain a professional relationship with them. They would then communicate with other staff members or other professionals in a formal manner to gain a professional relationship with them. An example of this would be communicating with a child in an informal manner. You wouldn’t communicate with a child using formal speech as they are only little and wouldn’t understand the terminology you would be using. You have to be able to know when to switch from using formal and informal and who to use them with.
1.2 An explanation of how communication affects relationships in a work setting.
Relationships can be affected in many different ways in a work setting, they can be either good or bad effects. One reason of why communication can affect relationships is, having a good relationship with your colleagues. If practitioners had bad relationships with each other it could put a child at risk of harm. An example of this is that if a child has any dietary needs and the practitioners aren’t communicating with each other, they can’t get
