Promote Communication in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings.

Unit SHC 31:
ASSESSMENT 1
Identify the different reasons people communicate? * To give and receive information i.e. every morning in work we have a handover to inform staff coming on shift what has been happening in the house and what jobs and appointments have to be done that day. * To report any difficulties i.e. if there has been any incidents within the house, all staff need will need to know this. * Helping young people learn i.e. our young people are learning life skills everyday they need to have a good education for their future and learning right from wrong, so good communication is vital for this. * Communicating with other professionals outside the house via telephone, email and direct contact i.e. liaising and sharing information with doctors, dentists, social workers, LCSB and managers.

ASSESSMENT 2
Explain how communication affects relationships in the work setting? * Communication in the work place is important as it helps you to build good relationships and trust with your colleagues, which helps you work effectively as a team. * Communicating effectively in a group or one-to-one with the young people will help you build a positive relationship with them, it is important to maintain this relationship so they feel happy and comfortable with you and their surroundings.

ASSESSMENT 3
Describe the factors to consider when promoting effective communication?
To promote effective communication you have to speak clearly and properly, using good eye contact and body language. If you do not completely understand what someone is telling you do not hesitate to ask and get them to repeat what they are saying or explain it in a different way until you understand.
ASSESSMENT 4
Explain how people from different backgrounds may use and/or interpret communication methods in different ways?
People come from many different back grounds and cultures. They might have stronger accents from different areas of the country and they may also use different lingo/slang words in which others might not understand. Another thing would be different cultures have different levels of boundaries regarding physical contact and what is or is not acceptable to say. There may also be a difference between “educated” and “un-educated” people, for example using long words and sentences which may sound completely foreign to somebody who has never heard them before.

Identify barriers to effective communication?
There are many different barriers to effective communication. * Language barriers – This happens when someone speaks in a different language or uses sign language which may result in the person not being able to understand what the other person is trying to say. * Sensory barriers – This is when someone is unable to gibe or receive information due to having impairment or loss of hearing or sight. * Health issues – Some long term illnesses may affect your ability to communicate such as Parkinson’s or Dementia.
