The Associate of Arts and Associate of Science programs are designed for those individuals seeking to transfer to a four-year institution. The Associate of Arts program concentrates heavily on the humanities and social sciences and is recommended for those who plan to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree. The Associate of Science program concentrates heavily on the natural sciences and mathematics and is recommended for those who plan to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree.

Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science program, the graduate will: 1- communicate effectively in written, verbal, and nonverbal forms. 2-demonstrate analytical and problem-solving skills that can be applied to real world situations. 3-use printed material, personal communication, observation, and technological applications for academic and personal purposes. 4-demonstrate awareness of social/behavioral sciences. 5-use quantitative reasoning processes to collect, analyze, solve, and interpret data. 6-transfer to a four-year UNC institution.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science program, the graduate will:
1.1 Demonstrate Standard English writing and speaking situations.
1.2 Demonstrate effective listening skills.
2.1 Develop skills needed to see relationships, similarities, and differences among ideas.
2.2 Demonstrate competence in considering options, predicting consequences, generating possibilities, and analyzing ideas and arguments.
3.1 Use computer applications responsibly as tools for research, organizing, problem-solving, and/or communicating information creatively.
3.2 Create documents using a word processing program, worksheets using spreadsheet programs, and create presentations.
4.1 Demonstrate awareness of the interdependence between global and American historical, political, and cultural issues.
4.2 Analyze concepts in the social/behavioral sciences and use processes of comparison and differentiation to comprehend the significance of these concepts to the human condition.
5.1 Follow directions for a procedure, report on the procedure, and draw conclusions which relate to concepts being studied and to real life applications.
5.2 Extract quantitative data from a given situation (numerical information in mathematical or other contexts), translate the data into information in various modes, evaluate the information, make logical deductions, and arrive at reasonable conclusions.
6.1 Have the verbal and nonverbal skills to succeed in subsequent courses at UNC-system institutions.
6.2 Have the scientific and mathematical knowledge necessary to succeed in subsequent courses at UNC-system institutions.

Course Description
This course, the second of two, is designed to teach professional communication skills. Emphasis is placed on research, listening, critical reading and thinking, analysis, interpretation, and design used in oral and written presentations.
