An analysis of Aaron’s language sample reveals that he may suffer from a language disorder. According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association also known as, ASHA, a language disorder is defined as “impaired comprehension and/or use of spoken, written and/or other symbol systems. The disorder may involve (1) the form of language (phonology, morphology, and syntax), (2) the content of language (semantics), and/or (3) the function of language in communication (pragmatics) in any combination (ASHA, 2013)”. Aaron appears to have difficulty elaborating the content of language used as well as his functional use of language in a socially appropriate manner. “Deficiencies in language can have a profound

It is recommended that a range of formal and informal assessments be conducted to provide the SLP with a greater understanding and knowledge of where the student stands, and if any further action/treatment is to be recommended. The first step to the assessment plan would be to conduct a questionnaire and/or interview of the child’s caregiver(s) and teachers. “A caregiver’s interview or questionnaire can be a valuable source of initial information on a client functioning and on the perceived problem from the caregiver’s perspective” (Owens, 2010). Samples of questions that may be asked include but are not limited to the following: When does the child communicate best? Does the child describe things in the environment? How? How does the child express emotions or feelings? What emotions does the child express?
