Elements of Design
Dot
Simplest form, minimum unit of visual communication, strong visual power to attract the dot
1- draws eye to
2- eye attempts to measure difference
3 or more- eye connects them to form a shape
Bullet points: pull you eye to list of things, helps you realize equal, establish and gain knowledge faster
Line
Continuation of a dot, moves your eye in one direction or another, used a divider
Straight line = stiffness and rigidity
Curved line = playful, soft, imply movement
Used to section off spaces – don’t stand out but not obvious used to help read knowledge faster when thing so close, eyes don’t know what to read 1st
Shape
Closed line, 3 basic shapes (parallelogram, circle, triangle)
Parallelogram
4 sided figure where opposite sides are parallel and equal
Two basic types
Square and rectangle
Circle
Powerful, draws eye
Use sparingly b/c draws eye so much!
Triangle
Challenges the eye to follow, convey direction
Type
Crucial to all designs
Play numerous roles in visual communication
Text, shape, purely visual element
You can use text in a shape- this is rare and hard to do
Text used as visual ex: shadow of title at the bottom of picture
Value (or tone)
The intensity of lightness or darkness of anything we see
Variations in value can
Increase or decrease contrast
Create movement
Lead the eye
Understanding how you want them to see the page then use these elements to achieve goal
Color
Light reflected off objects
Closely related to tone
