The Geography of Thailand
Location. Thailand is located in Southeastern Asia, bordering the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. It is also southeast of Burma.
Land Area. Thailand has a total area of 513,120 square kilometers. This includes 510,890 sq. km of land along with 2,230 sq. km being water. This country ranks as the 51st biggest country in the world, and is comparable to being twice the size of Wyoming.
Border Countries. Thailand borders the countries of Burma, Cambodia, Laos, and Malaysia. Thailand shares a 1,800 kilometer border with Burma, a 803 kilometer border with Cambodia, a 1,754 kilometer border with Laos, and a 506 kilometer border with Malaysia.
Climate. Thailand has a tropical climate; Thailand has southwest monsoons that occur from mid-May to September. These weather occurrences are typically accompanied with much rain, warm temperatures, and cloudiness. The other times of the year (November to mid-March) are occupied by Northeast monsoons. These are typically accompanied by dry and cool conditions. There is one part of the country though, the Southern isthmus that is always hot and humid.
Terrain. Thailand is naturally divided into four topographic regions: 1) the North, 2) the Central Plain, or Chao Phraya River basin, 3) the Northeast, or the Korat Plateau, and 4) the South, or Southern Isthmus.
1) The North is a mountainous region characterized by natural forests, ridges, and deep, narrow, alluvial valleys. 2) Central Thailand, the basin of the Chao Phraya River, is a lush, fertile valley. The Central area consists of one vast lowland plain watered by the Menam, or, to call it by the real name, the river Chao Phya, and other river systems. 3) The Northeastern region, or Korat Plateau, is an arid region characterized by a rolling surface and undulating hills. Harsh climatic conditions often result in this region being subjected to floods and droughts. The North- Eastern area is a vast plateau tilted towards south-east and drained by the river Mekhong which forms the eastern boundary between Thailand and French Indo-china. 4) The Southern region is hilly to mountainous, with thick virgin forests and rich deposits of minerals and ores.
