Male and Female Communication Styles
Disagreements can happen with members of the opposite sex; however, it seems that people of the opposite sex tend to argue more than those of the same sex. Males and females are very different in many ways. To begin with, they have different physical appearances, but the differences to stop there. Men and women are not only different genetically, but socially which may create problems, especially when it comes to communication. Men and women speak using very similar words, but have very different actions.
To begin with, men and women communicate differently in many different ways verbally and nonverbally. It has been known that women use more nonverbal communication than men do. This may be because women are better interpreters of nonverbal communication. In addition to nonverbal communication, women also make more eye contact, use more gestures, and use more facial expressions than men (Duncan, 2007). Next, women have a tendency to smile more often and attracted to those who also smile. In addition to above, talking face to face or in private is comfortable and common for women to do than men.
Men use communication to establish identity, expertise, and their knowledge base whether on a personal or professional level. They also ensure their settings are appropriate for conversations such as when in a meeting room or sitting on a couch, while possibly continuing to shift positions to make the setting comfortable allowing for them to feel dominant and in control of the conversation. While men establish themselves upfront, they do feel more comfortable talking in informal conversations versus professional environments and will spend more time talking in this type of setting then women do.
Women use communication to establish rapport with others socially and professionally. While status and dominance is not of high importance to women like the man, they do look to be relationship oriented and acceptance in a room setting. They will nod to others to show acceptance, acknowledgement or agreement of what is being said unlike a man. They are thought to not be in agreement or listening if they do not nod (Lieberman, 2015).
In conclusion, men and women both need to have a balanced approach to their communications. There needs to be an understanding of what the motivation is behind the type of behavior
