Globalization In the world we live in today, it is possible for someone to contact someone on the other side of the world with just a click of a button. As a matter of fact there’s plenty of ways two people who are millions of miles away from each are able to communicate through phone calls, text messages, emails, mail, video chat, and social networking. As the years progress these forms of communication are being made to work faster and faster. Everyone wants the fastest internet, the fastest cell phone service, the fastest cars, and the fastest food. Thanks to endless growth of technology we are able to get the things we need and get it fast. We can also thank technology for how connected and small our world has become. In the process of globalization telephones, computers, cable, satellites, radios, television, planes, and plenty of other innovations have played a huge role. Although some believe globalization is tearing the world apart, I believe globalization is bringing people in the world together in many different aspects. These aspects include “political, social, cultural, economic, and technological interconnectedness” (Vanderzanden). First aspect considered is politics. Now that individuals have the ability to easily travel or contact someone across the globe, countries have been more connected and if something occurs in one country it can have an impact on another country. Issues such as terrorism, climate change, disease, international business, and international crime can involve more than one state. Of course when states have to work some issues may arise. In order to create global goals for all states and manage international affairs international institutions and nongovernmental organizations (NGO’s) are created. Some familiar international institutions and NGO’s include the International Monetary Fund, the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, Amnesty International, and Greenpeace. As these institutions continue to grow, so do the relationships and connections between its members (Yorkshire). As individuals we also manage to educate ourselves on the politics around the world. Perhaps it’s a country you’ve visited, a country you’re from, or just a country you heard about on the news. All someone has to do is turn on the news, pick up a newspaper, or research the internet and we are instantly connected to global politics. Through the simple source of knowledge an individual can become connected to the world. The next form of globalization that ties the world together is social globalization. According to surveys conducted in 2012, out of the 6 billion people that live on our planet, approximately 4.8 billion of those own a cell phone (Bennett). Owning a cell phone gives an individual the power to make a phone call or send a text message to anyone, anywhere, whenever they’d like. Over the last decade the popularity of the cell phone has grown significantly. Having a source of communication at your fingertips has influenced how connected the people in our world are. At the rate we’re moving cell phones are becoming a necessity and manufacturers see this as an opportunity to make phones that are faster, smarter, and versatile. In these days cell phones are capable of doing much more than just send texts or make phone calls. With the increasing developments of smart phones, we have the power to send emails, access social networking, download applications, get directions and maps, take pictures, record videos, and listen to music all in our pocket. Perhaps we owe some of the popularity of social networking to smart phone manufacturers who make it so easy for individuals to get connected. Based on surveys conducted in 2012, approximately 56% of the world is on a social network ("Social Networking Statistics"). Social networks give people the opportunity to share pictures, videos, posts, and blogs with the rest of those on the World Wide Web. This also gives people the opportunity to meet and
