2) 4 pts. Why does the author of our textbook suggest that “…globalization is not an entirely new process” (pg. 36)? How is contemporary globalization different from globalization in the past? The author of the book says that globalization is not a new a thing, it has been around a while back, since the trade of spices from Asia and Africa to Europe in the 15th century, and he’s right before reading this, I knew that porcelain was brought from china, and also this globalization was the main reason of why Christopher Columbus found America because he was looking for an easier route to access India. YAY! Good job. The author of the book suggest is not the same globalization since this new globalization involves more financial, political and cultural interdependence, and I think what he means is that nowadays there are more laws, regulations, safety laws, hygiene and supervision. Yes. Lots more integration (connections) in the past because of all those things you mention.

3) 4 pts. Placelessness refers to “the loss of the unique character of different places and the increasing standardization of places and cultural landscapes (Greiner, 2011 pg. 42). Vernacular architecture refers to the common structures that are connected with a specific place and time, reflecting more of the local culture. Describe where you live right now—are there any parts that would match this description of placelessness or vernacular culture? The place where I live right now I think is more placelessness, in three houses around me, my neighbors speak Spanish at home; and I lived close to a shopping center there is a Chinese restaurant, an Asian market, a Latin market, two beauty salons one is Dominican and the other one is Honduran, and there is also a pizzeria run by Italians. I can see why you would go with placelessness. This is a tricky situation because this sounds like a lot of diversity, which is pretty unique. Placelessness is when everything in the landscape is starting to look the same, and you can’t tell the difference between this place and others that exist elsewhere., but if your argument is that this is what a lot of other similar communities look like, then it works. Just clarifying!

4) 3 pts. One example of other cultures diffusing is the spread of anime (pg. 43). Provide and explain three examples of cultural diffusion from other places to the United States. Include at least two that are not from the textbook reading assignment. • I’m a huge make up fan, and lately BB creams have been getting really popular in the United States; BB creams were originally created in Germany for people who had been through laser procedures or surgery and need it light coverage, and after that BB creams became really famous in South Korea, and now here in the United States. Interesting, had no idea about BB creams and now I do! • Harry Potter • This is funny, but I think the idea that world is going to end in 2012, the idea comes from the Mayans. Sure hope it doesn’t! 5) 4 pts. The textbook uses the example of the McDonald’s menu in India to describe the term “glocalization (pg. 43).” Why is the example of McDonald’s used? Provide another example of glocalization that is not based on McDonald’s and explain why it fits. You may need to do some Internet research here. In El Salvador I see this really often, for example in Pizza Hut they have Salvadorean Horchata to drink, Little Caesar sells Churros, and Wendy’s serves plantain and beans for breakfast.
