THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK – ASSIGNMENT

1. There are numerous reasons for the popularity of Anne Frank’s style of writing. First of all, the diary is very well written, it’s clear and concise, easy to understand and the language level is quite high:
“It's really a wonder that I haven't dropped all my ideals, because they seem so absurd and impossible to carry out. Yet I keep them, because in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.”
“I can shake off everything as I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn.”

Readers will also know what she has been through as she describes precisely what she felt in the Secret Annexe, and what it was like growing up. She is also a normal teenager who falls in love, fights with her parents, thinks about the future… however most readers would know that she did not survive the holocaust which makes the story very dramatic, her life and death also shows us how horrible the holocaust was. When the diary was first given to her, Hitler’s anti-Jewish laws had not been put in place in Holland, where Anne and her family were living. Another possible reason for the popularity of Anne Frank’s diary is that it was written from her point of view during a period of great uncertainty and at a turning point in history. For Anne the diary was going to be her best friend and pretend as if it was a real person. It was an outlet for sharing her inner most feelings, fears and state of mind. Her first diary entry was: “I hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone, and I hope you will be a great source of comfort and support”

- 2. Despite the fact that Anne had written her diary based on what she had experienced, the whole diary might not be 100 percent truthful. For example there might be an exaggeration on a small event and therefore it will not be the truth. She tells us how the people hiding in the Secret Annexe hate her including her mother but it is probably just discipline, only Anne sees it differently.
“At night in bed I see myself alone in a dungeon, without Father and Mother. Or I’m roaming the streets, or the Annex is on fire, or they come in the middle of the night to take us away and I crawl under my bed in desperation.”
Despite all of Anne’s claims that she is independent and cares nothing for her mother, she still fears separation from her parents, showing that they actually provide her with more comfort than she realizes.
We have to remember that she is a teenage girl and what she is writing is based on her point of view. So really we cannot believe everything she has written but we can believe a fair bit of the diary.
