Genocides: Past, Present, Future, and Worldwide
Genocides have happened in past and are still going on. A genocide is the deliberate killing of a large group of people, specifically those of a particular ethnic group or nation. Genocides have been happening whether you were knew it or not. These mass murders have been taking place over the years involving many countries as allies or enemies . There are three that stand out; the Darfur, Rwanda, and the reason the Holocaust started, the violation of the versailles treaty.
The Darfur genocide started in 2003 and is currently going on. It involves the mass slaughter of men, women, and kids in West Sudan. This genocide evolved from the two civil wars prior to the start in 2003. It has affected more than just the victims involved but allies and surrounding countries. People that are involved are the U.N., China, Russia, Africa, and the U.S.
This Darfur genocide is being lead by the Janjaweed. A group of government supported Arab militia. The Janjaweed is causing the destruction of the Darfurians by burning villages, looting economic resources, polluting water sources, and murdering, raping, and torturing the people. Currently, over 480,000 people have been killed, and over 2.8 million are displaced. Sudan is the largest country in Africa. The estimated pop. of Darfur is around six million people. Almost half of the population is displaced and about 30% of the Darfurians are killed. Many refugees
Sudan had two civil wars for the rest of the 20th century.A civil war broke out between the North and South of Sudan.The first civil war ended in 1972 but it broke out again in 1983. As the civil war between the North and the South reached its peak in the 1990’s, the government ignored the violence and war in Darfur.
The Rwanda genocide started in 1994. It was the mass slaughtering of the Tutsi and the Hutu people. It lasted approximately 100 days. Some reports say that there were 800,000 to 1 million killed. The U.N. and Yugoslavia responded and helped stop and rebuild Rwanda. This genocide was happening in Rwanda, Africa.
Rwanda is located in the center of Africa, just below the equator. Its surrounded by Uganda, Tanzania, and Burundi. It’s capital is Kigali. That is were this mass slaughter sparked and branched out. The population is 90% Hutu people, 9% Tutsi, and 1% Twa. Most of the Tutsi population was killed with 500,000 of them.
Hutu nationalist group Parmehutu had social revolution which overthrew the Tutsi ruling class, which ended up with 20,000 Tutsis dead and the exile of another 200,000 Tutsis to surrounding countries.Most of the killing were done by two Hutu radical militant groups: the Interahamwe and the Impuzamugambi That led to Rwanda gaining independence from Belgium in 1961 and thats when Hutu led government. Any Tutsi people left in the country were discriminated against. The rest of them were refugees in other and surrounding countries.
This genocide is different than genocides of the 20th century, the Rwandan genocide began and kept escalating before the national media. Journalists, radio broadcasters, and TV news reporters covered the events live from Rwanda, until the violence escalated to high levels of violence and all foreigners were told to evacuate. Basically the world knew but didn’t step in. The UN peacekeeping force in Rwanda, was there throughout the genocide. After, the U.N. and Yugoslavia stepped in to help with the aftermath.
The Holocaust was a well know genocide. Approximately 11 million lives were lost. During the first half of the 20th century, the Nazi party, led by Adolf Hitler, was saying Jews and others such as gypsies, homosexuals, the mentally ill, or physically disabled, were useless. They wanted to get rid of all of them. They decided the best way was to set up camps to exterminate. This was the plan to create “the perfect race”.
