Assignment: BIO112 Phase 5 Lab Report

TITLE: Diseases and Disorders

INSTRUCTIONS: Enter the Virtual Lab, and examine the areas of the heart. Then, proceed to examine test results for each patient. Please type your answers. When your lab report is complete, submit this document to the classroom.

Part I: Examine the human heart, and answer the following questions.

1. What do the coronary arteries supply blood to?
Coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle

2. Name 2 risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD).
Risk factors include obesity and a diet high in cholesterol/saturated fats. By reducing foods that are high in saturated fats, exercising, and eating healthy one can drastically reduce their risk.

3. What is happening during a myocardial infarction (MI)?
A myocardial infarction is the most serious outcome of coronary heart disease and is the most serious outcome of heart disease. It occurs when blockage cause by plaque buildup prevents blood flow to the heart or arteries. Myocardial infraction occurs when there is damage caused to the heart because of blockages,

Part II: Examine each patient’s results, and answer the following questions. Record the patient’s lab values for use in your lab report in the following table:

Patient Age Height Weight Blood Pressure Blood Sugar Cholesterol / Triglycerides
Steven 53 6’ 245 140/90 mm/hg 130 mg/dl 190/30/520 mg/dl
Elijah 34 5’1” 100 90/50 mm/hg 105 mg/dl 130/35/185 mg/dl
Betty 21 5’3” 120 110/75 mm/hg 80 mg/dl 90/65/90 mg/dl

Patient 1: Steven

4. Based on the image of Steven’s arteries, what can you determine about his health? Are there indications of a particular risk? Explain your conclusions.
He is showing signs of shortness of breath, decreased lung capacity, chest pain. Steven seems to be experiencing early warning signs of a heart attack/heart disease. Based on scans of Steven’s arteries, he has large amounts of plaque buildup which restricts blood flow to the heart muscle.

5. Which of his lab values next to his image results would help indicate this risk? Explain.
His cholesterol and triglycerides are extremely higher than normal levels

6. What did the final image of Steven indicate? This image is an X-ray of his lungs. His lungs are constricted due to lack of blood flow. Also his weight and pressure on the lungs has contributed to the shortness of breath. Because his body mass is large, his heart has to work twice as hard to circulate blood and with blockage I the arteries, he is experiencing symptoms that indicate his body is not functioning correctly.

7. Name 2 possible treatments for what you found in the second image.
Proper blood flow needs to be restored to the heart. Two treatments to accomplish this is thrombolytic therapy which is also known as clot busing therapy or a minimally invasive therapy called angioplasty. Also there are several medications that one can take such as beta-blockers or calcium channel blockers.

8. What is a metastasis?
Metastasis is a cancer that has spread from its original origin through the blood. Most common types of metastatic cancer are lung, liver, and bone. Metastasis cancer has same features of original cancer even though it may be in another part of the body originally.

Patient 2: Elijah

9. Based on the image of Elijah’s arteries, what can you determine about his health? Are there indications of a
