Role of Religion in Puritan Times.
In the Puritan day everyone was very religious, because barely anyone had their own say in their beliefs. If a person was to say that they were not a believer, they would be considered a witch and would be hanged . In the
Crucible,
people were hanged for having their own beliefs. In the
Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, there were sermons that told people other beliefs against God is a sin, and they would be sent to hell.
Religion played a part in
The Crucible
, because many of peoples faith were questioned whether or not a person knew the bible. In the Salem witch trials if a person were to be caught doing something that is not of God they were considered a witch. For example, when Hale asked Elizabeth Proctor if she knew her Ten Commandments,
Elizabeth said,” I surely do. There be no mark of blame upon my life, Mr. Hale. I am a covenant woman.”
A person’s religion was also put to the test, if they would confess to being under the Devil or die for their beloved God. If a person were to confess that they were under the Devil they would be hanged because they were classified as a bad person. For example, when Judge Danforth tried to see if John Proctor was combined with the antichrist, John said, “ I say , I say, I say God is dead.” John is trying to say that all the goodness in the world is gone.
Religion played a major role in from Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, because that is mainly what they are talking about through the story. The essay says that every sin makes God more mad. For example, when Jonathan Edwards said,” So that thus it is, that natural men are held in the hand of God over the pit of hell.” He is trying to describe if a person is not good, He will hold their faith over the gate of Hell.
Back in the Puritan times everyone who has sinned were considered demons and
were
