Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
1.1 Explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults.
Effective communication is vitally important in the development of positive relationships. Some students may struggle with learning or have confidence issues which can lead to them having communication issues and not want to talk openly with all adults. This means treating that pupil in a calm, positive and gentle manner could mean the difference between them trusting us or closing down and giving up, but this also relates to all students and I believe that all students should be spoken to the way I would want to be spoken to by others and that negative comments or tones would hurt feelings. If we do not use good communication skills in our interaction with others, our message may be misinterpreted, only partly understood or at worst lost completely. I also take this stand when talking to adults that I work with or with the parents of the students. We have to communicate with others in a clear, precise and understanding way to show them that we are listening to them and that we respect them and their opinions. If we communicate in this way few misunderstandings will occur and a positive relationship can be built. From my own experiences in life it has shown me that communication is very important so that everyone can do their jobs effectively. I have also experienced that when a person doesn’t have effective communication skills they are often mis-judged by others. It is especially important that as adults we communicate effectively and get along with our colleges whilst working in the classroom environment, as students can easily pick up on bad atmospheres. We need to remember that us as adults must communicate in a positive way to each other to teach children how to communicate, we are their role models.

Communicating in the right way will show colleagues that you are able to talk to them about any aspects of your role as a teaching assistant and show them that you are willing to take on any task within that role. Also
Developing positive relationships with others is the main key to a happy and calm environment. Without a positive and supportive attitude there will be no trust and honesty
