The Fight

“Right below us, is a desert”, said Thomas. “My dad told me, anyone who’s said to have been there has never returned.”
A chill went up Alex’s spine. “What’s this desert called,” asked Alex.
The pilot chipped in, “We call it Dead Man’s Desert.”
Alex peered out of the window down onto the desert. The evening moonlight spread out across the desert making it look evil.
“I can’t wait until we get to New Zealand,” exclaimed Thomas. “The world cup is going to be awesome; my aunty got us tickets for the final!”
“We are probably going to be jet-lagged when we arrive, so we better get some sleep. Good night, Thomas”.
As Alex closed his eyes the plane jolted. The pilot started yelling things into the radio. “We’re out of control, repeat, we are out of control!”
Thomas was unconscious. He had been thrown into the side of the plane. Alex had no choice. He had to jump. The plane was no more than 100 metres from hitting the sandy desert. Alex opened the emergency exit. 3, 2, 1, he jumped.

Alex hit the surprisingly soft sand with a thud. He sunk in a good metre. Alex got up out of the sand. ‘Boom!’ The little plane they had been flying in had exploded on impact. It was so bright Alex’s eyeballs nearly popped out, and it was so loud it felt like his ears were going to shatter. Alex ran over to the plane to find that both the pilot and his best mate, Thomas, had perished. All that was left was two soot-covered skeletons. Alex thought to himself, is this actually happening. He sobbed for a while, what is he going to do? He has no food, no water supply, just a half full drink bottle that he used for the way over. Alex pulled out his phone. No reception, of course. As the night dragged on, Alex got tired. All Alex had with him was some jeans and a light sweatshirt, which would have to do. Alex grabbed some left over aluminium from the plane wreck and made an A-frame like shelter. This would keep the wind out. The sand was still warm from the scorching sun, so Alex dosed off like an old man watching T.V. Alex dreamt of everything that had happened. First the plane crash, then his best mate dying. His aunty would be so worried.

Alex woke up suddenly. Although it was still dark, it was 9:30 in the morning according to Alex’s phone. Alex looked up. There were no stars like he remembered and where had his shelter gone. Suddenly, lights flicked on. This definitely wasn’t a desert. A man with a long white beard walked into the room. To his side were two other men.
“Welcome to the Desert of Death,” he announced. “Here we will train you to fight a lion so you can earn your way to freedom.”
The only two words Alex heard were fight and lion. It didn’t sound good.
“Why do I have to fight a lion,” asked Alex.
“Because, you either join my army of men or you fight your way to freedom.”
Although Alex didn’t want to fight the lion, he also didn’t want to join this weird army. He wanted to be with his family. Alex stuttered, “I’ll fight the lion.” “Excellent,” said the bearded man. “These men will show you to your room. Your training starts in two hours. I will give you 3 days.”

Alex sat on his lumpy mattress. There was so much information rushing through his mind at one time, it felt like his whole head was going to explode. I mean, I haven’t done anything. Why can’t they just let me go? A buff man walked into the room. “I’m your trainer,” he said. “You can call me Jeremy. If you’re still looking like that in three days, you’re gonna have no chance. I better get you shaped up.”
Jeremy showed Alex the facilities. Although Alex hated the place, they were amazing. They had a fully equipped gym, a fighting arena, and even a 400m running circuit.
“Today’s lesson will be on fitness,” Jeremy yelled, although Alex was right beside him. “I bet you couldn’t run 400m,” he said.
Alex stepped up to the start line. The whistle went and he was off. Alex was puffing and blowing by his second lap but he kept going. Alex stopped at 8000m and
