The Emperor and the Assassin

The movie The Emperor and the Assassin was made in 1999, and was directed by Chen Kaige. The main characters of the movie were: King of Qin, Ying Zheng, and Lady Zhao. Ying Zheng had two main goals, to unify under heaven and to create a Chinese Empire by destroying other Kingdoms. For Lady Zhao, she sees the King as an enemy, and hires an assassin. At the end of the movie, Lady Zhao’s plan for killing the king failed because the king killed the assassin, so now the King Ying had successfully unified all six kingdoms and claimed to be the first emperor in China. To begin with, the movie is a historical drama that happens back in 221 B.C during the Han Dynasty. Ying Zheng has been in love with Lady Zhao, and tries his best to win her love by unifying all the states under one kingdom to prove his love and care for her. Ying Zheng and Lady Zhao have been childhood friends for the longest time where Ying Zheng will always listen to Lady Zhao no matter what. But over the years everything changes. Of course, Lady Zhao helped Ying Zheng because she was moved by how he wants peace for China. But then, after getting the idea of hiring an assassin, Lady Zhao starts falling in love for assassin because the assassin turns out to be a caring man that doesn’t want to kill no more after experiencing killing a sword smith family. Lady Zhao never knew that there are certain assassins where they would have a “soft side” to themselves.

Referring back to the beginning of the movie, all the states in China has been in turmoil for so long so Ying Zheng had a motivation of unifying his own state with the other six states to make a vast empire under his rule and to bring stability and peace with all the Chinese people. As for Lady Zhao, wants to terminate the Ying Zheng because he wants to unify all six kingdoms and be the first emperor of China. First, Ying Zheng was able to convince Lady Zhao to stay by his side by being convinced he will unify the states. So then, Lady Zhao gets’ the idea that the only way that she could get rid of him is by hiring an assassin to do the job. Further more, Lady Zhao motivates herself by getting her face branded like the rest of the peasants, which symbolizes the promise, which Ying Zheng and Lady Zhao had made.
