A competition is neither bias nor is it judgmental. It treats everyone the same, and has one universal language that anyone can learn. It works around the language barrier, and it does not belong to one culture or being. It brings people together through the subjective experiences and same struggles that everyone faces in a competition. During the Olympics, countries from all around the world gather to compete, setting aside each other’s differences and forming unity. “SeedFolks” is about a broken community in Cleveland, and through a simple act of an Asian girl planting lima bean seeds, in memory of her father, created a ripple effect that shook the entire community. Each chapter of “Seedfolks” introduces a new character and that character’s vantage point. Throughout the book, the characters’ live are intertwined with each other and how each characters grows by working in the garden and talking to one another. Despite their linguistic and cultural differences, the characters in “SeedFolks” help each other out by doing selfless deed, trading food, and trading gardening techniques. In chapter 3, when Wendell built dirt ring around Kim’s lima bean, Kim was frightened by Wendell and runaway. Words were not exchanged by the two, and when Wendell came back to check the garden, he noticed that Kim had copied his technique. This inspired Wendell to make his own garden. Despite and the age and cultural differences between Kim and Wendell, Wendell was still able to communicate with Kim without saying anything. The techniques shared is the language of the garden. It helps people grow without sharing the same language or background. Although it is hard to ask a stranger for help because humans’ obnoxiously are prideful, by finding a common interest that is shared internationally like gardening, sports, and technology, humans can break barriers by sharing their techniques, which allows humans and that common interest to grow together.
Today’s world, ethnic groups are divided. Ethnic groups of the same culture tend to stick together and shunning the rest of the other groups out. It’s been one of America’s biggest problem. Sam from “Seedfolk” said “With a few exceptions, the blacks on one side-, the white on another, the Central
