Texting while driving: A Serious and Deadly Practice
Modern society as we know it has become one that is so task oriented that most individuals do not take to slow down and observe the world around them. Most people are consumed by chores that literally take up more than half their day; this is further compounded by the fact that we now have access to gadgets and electronics that are labeled “smart” because of their features and capabilities. Communication technology is faster than it has ever been before, and very few locations are considered remote due to these technological breakthroughs. One of the benefits of this growth in technology is the advent or “birth” of smart phones, portable devices that have the same computing power as a basic laptop. What this simply means is that individuals who own such devices are now capable of receiving and transmitting audio, video, and text messages anytime and at almost any location.
Although an added benefit for most owners, smart phones can become a distraction in many a situations, in fact, a lot of production and learning environment have policies that forbid the use of them. In fact, one of the most dangerous practices seen in recent times, as a result of the increasing popularity of these smart phones, texting while operating a moving vehicle. This is not only distracting, but it is considered an irresponsible and selfish act, the good news however is that this growing and disturbing trend is being outlawed in a number of cities around the world. Some people oppose this action by legislators and argue that is infringement upon their civil rights, others argue that it often times essential to communicate with family members or colleagues. Individuals or groups who against this trend being banned are missing a few key important facts, the first of which is that it is not possible to be 100% focused while operating a moving vehicle and typing on a mobile device at the same time. The second and often most muted point is that driving a car or otherwise mobile vehicle is not an isolated hobby, it is a responsibility to the other motorists and pedestrians on the road. The remotest of locales, now have multiple drivers, pedestrians, and residents close to high traffic routes.
