Unfortunately we live in a world today in which we musk as the question whether it is reasonable for a government to purposefully target and kill a civilian or “unlawful combatant” out of the government’s own interest. The obvious answer to this question is a resounding NO! Our world is a mesh of many sovereign nations and if it were acceptable to merely target and kill people which we do not like or agree with simple because we can, the rights that we as Americans and the greater United Nations laid out, would be completely ignored. Article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights created by the UN states that “No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.” And article 11 orders, “Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty according to law in a public trial.” My opponents would argue that this practice is acceptable because the targets have broken some sort of law of national interest and therefore they merit assassination. But as history has made it clear, one countries opinion on the matter is not the only one. Imagine if Great Britain had performed targeted killing on their opponent Mahatma Gandhi. Certainly, he had broken British laws. Certainly he posed a threat to Britain. Does that mean that it would have been ok to assassinate this man, because he opposed the British? OF COURSE NOT.
