DBQ: Slavery

Africans came to America in 1619 and became a controversial issue because once in America they were converted on to slavery. For more than two centuries slavery has been the point of discussion between those who support and the ones who believe slavery should be opposed. The essay discusses points of view between people who believe slavery should be a continued practice and the opposing people who deny slavery. People who praise slavery argue Africans have been provided the opportunity to enjoy better living conditions. In the words of Senator John C. Calhoun whom believes
“Never before has the black race of Central Africa, from the dawn of history to the present day, attained a condition so civilized and so improve, not only physically, but morally and intellectually…”.This is how Mr Calhoun believe slavery should be justified.
Another supporter of slavery was Chancellor Harper. Mr. Harper believed that the emancipation of the slaves would affect the economy in that it would end cotton growth as slaves could demand higher wages resulting affecting trade with European countries. On the other hand, opponents of slavery firmly believed that Africans should be free because of God’s natural given rights as everyone is created equally. As argued by the Declaration of Independence “ that all men are created equal, and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, among which are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”.
