What was the representation of the people’s act 1918?
The representation of the people’s act was a law stating that all women over the age of 30 could now vote as long as they were a householder or married to a householder. Previously no woman was allowed to vote; but they did not have the same voting rights as men. The representation of the people’s act also stated that all males over the age of 21 were now allowed to vote, no matter if they were disabled or a lunatic.
Government had decided that women over 30 could have the vote as many women were married by the age of 30 and could be influenced by their husbands. However some women didn’t care about the vote as they had thought it was pointless and not needed as men already had the vote. Some women also thought that they didn’t need to fill their heads with politics and worry about government as that was traditionally seen as a males job to vote.
