The French and Indian War was a war between France and Great Britain over North American territory. This war’s aftermath had a great impact on the relationship between Britain and it’s colonies. It changed the relationship dramatically and eventually led to the colonies becoming independent. The colonist began to rebel against the British when the Proclamation of 1763 was passed. Also contributing was all the taxes the British were passing on the colonies, as well as the decrease of protection needed from the British to the colonies. This three reasons led the colonist to changed their relationship status with Great Britain. The Proclamation of 1763 was a document that stated the colonies could not expand westward to the territory of Canada and west of Mississippi. This document caused colonist to build up anger with the British crown changing their relationship status. The colonist felt as if their prize from the French and Indian War was taken away from them. While the British felt it was safer to keep the colonist out of the Indian territory, due to the fact that the British government did not want to upset the Native Americans. Colonist could not stand to be trapped in the colonies, and felt like a caged animal. They were eager to expand westward in order to gain more land and create bigger crops. Since they were unable to move west, they could not grow more crops, therefore profits were not raised. Angering the colonist all that more. “Taxation without representation” was also an issue that resulted in the change of relationship with the British. After the French and Indian War, the British were in terrible debt. Therefore they raised taxes on the colonist as a way to make them pay their share of the debt. The Sugar Act was passed by Parliament in 1764 as a way to get the colonist to help pay some of the debt. This act was placed on sugar, which at the time the majority of colonist used daily. Then came the Stamp Act of 1765 where taxes where place on printed paper. This was the act that the colonist saw as a violation to their rights as English citizens.
