Introduction
Within the veterinary practiced there are many drug all of which must be keep away from the public and their animals too to prevent any animals health deteriorating, theft and possibly human consumption of drugs intended for animal use to treat a specific illness which has been diagnosed by a qualified veterinary surgeon. There is important legislation that a practice must comply with or they would be breaking the law and could possibly cause unintended harm to members of the public, children and/or animals. A great deal of care must be taken when deciding where and how prescription only drugs are stored in the surgery.

Misuse of drugs act 1971
The purpose of the misuse of drugs act 1971 is to restrict the access of controlled drugs stored in the veterinary practice. It also includes any other premises in which the drugs may be stored such as a house, vehicle or other premises where the drugs may be temporarily stored. Controlled drugs may be used inappropriately by people for recreational uses which can cause intentional or unintentional death. Due to this veterinary surgeons are responsible for securely storing and ensuring there is no direct access by members of the public which does include friends and family, employees should only have access as appropriate. This is why a veterinary surgeon must comply with the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 when storing prescription only drugs within the work place. Under this Act it is an offence for any person knowingly to permit the production, supply and/or use of controlled substances on their premises unless the circumstances are exceptional i.e. the drugs have been prescribed by a doctor or veterinary surgeon.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 is a primary piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety. This Act is in place to keep the employees as safe as possible in the workplace. Employees will be educated on what drugs they can sell to members of the public without that drug being prescribed, keeping the employee, customer and animal safe.
