Response of A Rant About Women In my response paper, I am going to talk about the problem of gender, which Shirky also presented in his paper, and I think how to solve the problem and the reason. I totally agree with Shirky about the problem of women and how to solve the problem because what he presented is the fact. In Clay Shirky’s Article, he shows the problem that currently, women in this society is still suffering inequity by presenting his own experience. Women cannot be noticed by other people and it is very hard for women to set their feet on many field. He thinks that the women need the self-promotion to get what they really want. If they do not raise their hands, they will not be called. Someone who raise their hands timidly get less called. The reason why people can be noticed is they are willing to risk to achieve something. The author says that although she also does not know what to do about this problem, it is good for women to see interesting opportunities and take them on and get in the habit of raising their hands and saying, “I can do that. Sign me up. My work is awesome,” no matter the risks and other people’ opinion about you. In my point of view, I think that it is very true that women experience the inequity from the past to current. In several decade years ago, women even had no right to go to school and have their own job. It seems that they were accessory oh men, marrying with men successfully and staying at homes to take care their children. At past time most of them did not have too much things to do. For now, many jobs are still limiting women. For example, few women work as engineer and many CEOs of companies are men. Women do not have too much options to choose their jobs. The commonest jobs for women are nurse, teacher and manager. Because of the inequality that women are suffering, lots of people may hold the opinion: “She is a women and women cannot do this. So she probably cannot do it well” Just like Shirky said in his article, “I’ve grown increasingly worried that most of the women in the department, past or present, simply couldn’t write a letter like that.” It is reasonable for most people to worry about that. Truly, women in the past time were limited by many policies. They are still being treated differently, although there is no limitation for women in 21 century. However, there is still solution for women to overcome the problem. In Shirky’s article, he presents a solution for women to be noticed by other people. “It would be good if more women see interesting opportunities that they might not be qualified for, opportunities which they might in fact fuck up if they try to take them on, and then try to take them on. It would be good if more women got in the habit of raising their hands and saying “I can do that. Sign me up. My work is awesome,” no matter how many people that behavior upsets.” I totally agree with Shirky’s solution. Women, who cannot be noticed by other people for a long time, now need to raise their hands and join the world. The problem of gender will be solved by the new technology like internet, and current social situation. We have already entered into internet age in 1990 and after a long development, people begin to rely on internet to receive and send information to the world. Internet technology is well developed in 2010, and it is more advanced than ever before. As we entered a new
