As a Surface Design and Textiles graduate, currently undertaking the PGCE, I am doing my teaching practice with HNC/HND Fashion Textiles students in the fashion department at Bedford College.
My role and responsibility are to support and demonstrate to young adults my creativity and knowledge I have learned from fashion industries and my studies. I give professional and creative recommendations to young adults (16 and over) at the college. Moreover I encourage students to be more visual, illustrative and to develop their awareness of the cultural context of fashion and textiles.
My aim is to become a Fashion/Textile Tutor or a teacher focusing in fashion Illustration. Having gained life experience in assisting teaching in schools and in different fashion industries, I now want to share both knowledge and experiences with the young adults of today and help them prepare the path for their future.
Art and Fashion is a way for young people to release their angsts, problems and restrictions. Also, Art encourages young people to look at the world from different viewpoints and to be creative in thought. Most importantly, it enables them to cope better with their everyday experience in life.
With this knowledge and familiarity, I will be addressing the criteria from my individual cognition, my teaching experience with artistic students, the support of the course leader and the mentor in the fashion department, With these primary researches, I will be able to understand what my own role in this department is and comprehend the real meaning of education.
1.1
The main aim of this piece of work is to evaluate my own understanding, responsibilities, relationship between teachers and other professional and my ability to maintain safe and supportive learning environment in the lifelong sector.
Before considering my own role and responsibilities in the classroom, there is the need to understand the meaning of education and its purpose. According to Curzon (2009), education is ’the nurture of human personality’ and as ‘investment in human capital’.
I believe the nature of education is to develop and improve each individual’s capacity in the classroom. By educating individuals, my responsibility is to give some desirable knowledge, attitudes, interests, good understanding and critical thinking. Having the ability to educate a group of students will lead each student to be able to learn and think in different way. To educate lifelong learning sectors, my role is to recognize the way learners comprehend from their experience or conceptualise the world around them depending on the profession they are studying.
“Learning depends on the individual’s experiences within, for example, his or her family, social environment and, more specifically, the educational institutions he or she attends.”(Curzon, 2009, p.4)
Lifelong Learning is an adult learning process where students are continuously supported by lecturers, Tutor or teachers who empower individuals to obtain all the knowledge
