Think of an organization with which you are familiar. How has that organization’s ethical policies changed as the result of external pressure? Provide examples. As a result of external pressure from the United States government and parents, various public school boards have changed their ethical policies. An especially large push for these changes comes from media exposure. These changes can be gradual or immediate. One example of a policy change is how schools deal with the issue of bullying. By definition, bullying is when “a person is habitually cruel or overbearing to others, especially to smaller or weaker people.” The Board of Management published in September 2013 also defines bullying as a “behavior, by its very nature, undermines and dilutes the quality of education.” Over the past several years, there have been a couple highly publicized news reports about children of various ages committing suicide as a result of constant bullying at school. Many states have passed laws to facilitate the prevention of bullying in schools. These laws require schools to establish policies in preventing bad behaviors that may result in bullying. “Students who violate anti-bullying provisions face suspension and expulsion; whereas schools and districts may face large monetary fines arising out of civil liability claims” (Bullying, 2013). Across the nation, many schools have adopted these policy changes. In order for these policies to be effective, the school and the parents of bullied children have to be proactive. They must approach the parents of the children who are bullying. The school must set up meetings to inform the children that there will be negative consequences if they continue to bully other students. Through letters or handouts, information about bullying needs to be sent home to inform parents that bullying is something serious and needs to be talked about at home. Not only do many children have to deal with bullying, but also there are also cases of cyber bullying that is very real. When our children are online, they are exposed to many different people online. There are predators out there that will try to convince our children to do things, talk to them in a harmful way, and these children may take this to heart and act on it. “No one should ever have to face a hurtful or threatening message when they turn on their phone or computer” (Hancock D., 2012). Hurtful messages, or harassing, have led to a good number of tragedies. Last month in Chula Vista, California, a sixteen year old high school student ended his own life by jumping off a bridge. This tragedy was the consequence of school bullying. According to other students, he was taken advantage of by other students. The students involved called him names and constantly harassed him. Some students
