Elie Wiesel in Night discusses his experiences as a Jew in the concentration camps during World War II. During this time, he witnessed many horrors. Two of these horrors were executions. Even though these executions shared a similar ceremony, the victims and the prisoners’ reactions to the victims varied greatly. The black gallows, the sharp orders, and the strange undertones indicated that trouble was near. A condemned man, a youth from Warsaw, was to be executed. At this execution, the prisoner was big and strong, and he was being executed for stealing. Two fellow prisoners helped with the task of killing the youth for two plates of soup. The other prisoners that were observing the execution seem calm and almost bored, ready to get to the evening meal. Luckily, the death was quick and no emotion was shown as each prisoner stared the dead man in the face. “I remember that I found the soup excellent that evening” (Wiesel 70). “For more than half an hour he stayed there, struggling between life and death, dying in slow agony under our eyes” (Wiesel 71).
