What is meant by diversity?

Diversity explains the many different and varied ways people can be different to one another. These differences can be their ethnic group, race, language, beliefs, values, age, mental and physical characteristics.

The many differences between people means we end up with diverse individuals, groups and communities. Each person has certain qualities that make them similar to other people and they also have unique qualities that make them different to all other people. Diversities within communities can lead to sustained growth in the area however it can also lead to hatred and even violence.

2. Describe the community you live in. Highlight some of the variations you may observe in terms of: • Interests • Beliefs • Ages • Lifestyles • Personal, social and cultural identities.

The community that I live in is very diverse in a number of different and varied ways. There are many different cultures, faiths and religions which can be seen on a daily basis and on the whole they all integrate with no real problems or opposition. There is a small minority of people whom have come from other countries and cultures and have settled in the area to live, work and raise families. The people in the community are able to practice their religion and faith in the many different places of worship that are within the area. The area has several churches which are divided between the Catholic and Protestant religion, there are however a number of independent places of worship that have sprung up in halls and even office buildings. These independent places of worship attract a small number of people from the Afro Caribbean background with many coming from neighbouring communities. Due to the area being predominately white and Church of England there are, at present no Mosques or Synagogues, which reflects on the people who live in the area.

Within my community there are many different services that provide activities to enable the diverse community to live and work together. This is promoted in the local leisure centres, dance schools, parks and playgrounds that are provided.

The area consists of a wide range of ages from youngster through to the elderly and for the majority of the time this causes no concerns. The area is generally a working class area however there is a high percentage of unemployed or single parents, which has caused resentment with a number of people in the area

3. Explain how the variations in question 2 contribute to the diversity of the community.

My two children both attend schools which enrols students from many different backgrounds be it religious, cultural or ethnicity. This is I believe a positive aspect as it helps to promote tolerance and students are able to gain a better understanding of other peoples differences. The children are also able to get a view of other peoples cultures and beliefs which can in turn enhance their own lifestyles by experiencing a multitude of differences.

There is a wide range of activities promoted in the area from the local leisure centres through to the two large football clubs housed in the neighbourhood. These, and other activates, encourage people of all ages and races to mix with each other which is a positive for the community as people are more willing to
