Legalized Abortion Abortion is not an easy decision to make for most women. A right to life is in the hands of a woman who makes the choice to have one. In our society today abortion has been a controversial issue. Many have their own opinions and views about abortion. It does not matter whichever side one decides to take, the argument seems to be fairly equal. For every argument supporting abortion there is a counter-point stating just the opposite. The pro-choice activists believe that it is the woman’s right to choose whether or not to give birth. On the other hand, there are people in our society who are making every effort to convenience our United States Congress to pass laws to make abortion illegal. The people who oppose abortion are called the pro-life. A woman should have the right to do as she will with her body. Abortion may not be an easy decision but I am against women who make the choice to have one. Since abortion is legal in the United States of America, many people believe that it should not remain legal. Multitudes of people in our society have come to believe that they benefit from abortion. If the government focuses on making it illegal to have an abortion it may force a woman into making a decision that could likely be very dangerous to their health, and very costly. Legalized abortions helps protect a women’s health, decreases the world’s population and keeps women from having unwanted pregnancies. Many women have died and or have been severely hurt physically before abortions were legalized. Doctors would perform that women have the back alley abortions and at a more costly fee. Many abortions were performed by people that weren’t even doctors. Women were maimed and humiliated before society. (Choice Matters, n.d). For this reason and many others, thousands of men and women fought for and won women’s legal right to make their own decisions about having an abortion. Keeping abortion legal has saved thousands of women from dying or being mutilated.
During the early 1970’s in Roe vs. Wade (1973), the U.S. Supreme Court stated that abortion ban is unconstitutional in every state nationwide. The main focus of Roe vs. Wade is that women have the right to make their own decisions over their own bodies and make the choice to have an abortion. That the fetus has no rights therefore the women has full rights to make the decision to terminate her own pregnancy when these rights fall under the privacy right cited in Roe vs. Wade. The laws against abortion kill women. If laws prohibited abortion it would not stop women from getting them. When women feel like an abortion is absolutely necessary they will be forced to choose to have abortions in secret, without proper medical procedures which could lead to dangerous health risk. In just the two decades before abortion was legalized in the United States, it’s been estimated that almost one million women each year had illegal abortions. Legalized abortions help protect a women’s health, and saves the lives of thousands of women nationwide. Especially for those women who have health conditions not limited to heart disease, severe hypertension, kidney disease, severe diabetes, and many other illnesses that can be life-threatening, legal abortions help ensure that medical complications with childbirth are limited. Legal abortions enable women to have the right to proper healthcare from medical professionals.
Therefore, legal abortions accidents or a rape doesn’t have to end a women’s economic or personal freedom. Abortions should be legalized so that all women have the same rights. Outlawing abortion would be an act of discrimination against low-income women, who are forced to seek out the dangerous illegal abortions in the dark compared to the rich who can afford to pay for a safe abortion. Women should have the right to carry their pregnancy or not, and taking this right away would go against our
