For many centuries African American’s have been treated as if they were lower class citizens and treated as so. It has taken them many years and help from some amazing people to rise above it all. After the many centuries of segregation and ill treatment, African Americans have been able to overcome and have become more respected in society today. This is a wonderful outcome of what is known as the Civil Rights Movement.
In 1865, America had many major changes that needed to be made; this period was considered the reconstruction or silver lining, time period. America was in a hard place and needed to make many changes to its many issues that were causing the country to be less than efficient This movement was not only for African Americans but for equal rights for all people (Hamilton, n.d). The most memorable developments occurred in year 1954, the court case of Brown versus the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. This case debated the segregation of students due to race. This helped to revisit the Supreme Court’s decision in the Plessy v. Ferguson case held in 1896 which states that there were to be equal rights among the races but that it was okay to have separate facilities such as bathrooms, fountains and other public facilities for blacks and for whites. This was known as separate but equal, which was still a form of racism. The outcome of the trial was that it was in fact unequal for there to be a separate white school and a separate black school. This was a big step forward in the civil rights movement and would help to move further to solve even more injustices.
There was a major push back for many of the whites when equality was being enforced this was called massive resistance. It was necessary to use military to be sure that the laws were being followed and that people remained safe during this major transition. During this transition even with the military on guard there were many blacks that were injured for such reasons as looking at a white woman and children endured being harmed by rocks being thrown at them on their travels to and from school.
As the Civil Right Movement progressed there were still areas that needed

pursuit. I believe in the journey, not the arrival.”(Doc B) In the quote its says that he believes in the journey, not the arrival of happiness. I chose this quote from the text because I agree with what he is saying. I believe that the journey to happiness is a much greater reward than happiness itself. Once you reach happiness there is really nothing else to do, nothing else to push and work for. The rewards you get on your way to become happy are just what makes the journey more worth it. Our rights…
experimental in its self; by using the blues Hughes celebrates African American culture, the blues links with the jazz age which fused white and African American culture together, through using the blues in his poetry Hughes is perhaps alluding to ideas of equality and the idea that brilliant things can be produced when cultures come together and work together in harmony. Furthermore whilst Hughes abandons Eliot’s notion of looking to past tradition as a means of finding order and coherence he uses dialect…
general public. The American Journey portrays the Civil Rights era as a general struggle for African Americans to gain equality, with the help of many American heros, such as John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. The central theme conveys the ideology that America, behind its leaders, collectively pursued a stronger and more unified future. In reality, the majority of America was doing everything they could to prevent African Americans from gaining any shred of equality in numerous facets of American…
client must get through each hurdle in the road before they can continue on. It is essential that each counselor within the organization must act and practice professionally. Each situation is its own route, therefore, each case is different and equality is must. My big thing, is making the client/ patient feel welcomed, and are comfortable enough to keep coming so that the problem is resolved. However, it is easy to develop a personal relationship, so professionalism should be obtained in all situations…
, President Hussein Barack Obama was sworn into office for his second term. President Obama is affirming the proposition…
The article I chose is a significant social event that “affected change in contemporary America” (Harper & Leicht, 2011, p. 66); initiating a new era in the fight for freedom and equality. This event once began in 1896 on a train, with Homer Plessy, but it wasn’t until December 1, 1955 that it truly began on a bus. Rosa Parks the 42 year old seamstress who refused to give up her seat to a white passenger set into motion “what many view as the birth of the civil rights movement” (Lewis &…
Minorities should have the same rights as majorities reminding us that everyone is equal. The journey for minorities to gain and maintain equality has not been easy. Minority groups have fought for ages to be treated equally. Whether it be for racial equality, gay rights or women's equality, these problems continue to be a struggle. Minorities have fought relentlessly for their rights and equality. Within our society, majority groups have unfair power over minorities. This power has caused a division…
and then this follows up with a fast forward to 1978 in November where the press is releasing the information on the assassinations of Milk and Moscone. Equality was a key concept in the reading and it is extremely evident in the film that equality was not being given to homosexuals. This is what Harvey Milk was fighting for. Homosexual equality was an issue throughout the film because they were looked at as different individuals and it was not accepted to want to be with the opposite sex. Harvey…
