In “Anthem” of Ayn Rand, the main character Equality 7-2521 and all the citizens of the society in the story have a tragic lives. A society with absolute conformity, which means there’s no individual right, everyone has to be the same as others, has to work for the government and follow unquestioned orders. The readers could easily find the different between “Anthem” ’s society and most countries’s society in the world. Furthermore, readers could see Equality 7-2521’s journey is much different, it ’s tougher and a lot harsher than most of teenagers’s journeys of becoming adult. The differences of Equality 7-2521’s journey and most of teenager’s journey of becoming adult are demonstrated in many aspects of theirs lives: education, job and love. In the quote “When we were five years old, we were sent to the home of student, where there are ten wards, for our ten years of learning. Men must learn till they reach theirs fifteenth year. Then they go to work”. The readers could figure out the main character has went to school since he was 5 years old until 15 then he will be assigned for a job. On the other hand, teenagers start theirs first grade at 7 years old, estimably graduate at 18, then from there it’s theirs options to choose to continuos to get higher educations such as college, university or go to work. It is a better life for teenagers with theirs freedom of education. “ We thought that we wished to be sent to the Home of the Scholars when our time would come”. “This was the only only thing which moved, for the lips of the oldest did not move as they said: “ Street Sweeper.” In the quotes above, Equality 7-2521 is desperate of wanting to be a Scholar, but it’s not his option, instead, he has to be a Street Sweeper because he is assigned to be. Comparing to most of teenagers life, after graduating high school, they have begin to have responsibility for themselves, including deciding what jobs they want to work or study with no infringing of others, forcing them to work or to be someone they do not like. Equality 7-2521 has a difficult life , way harsher than most of teenagers.
