John Calvin John Calvin was born on July 10th, 1590 in Noyon, France. Growing up his father always wanted him to become a priest because he was raised in a Roman Catholic family. His father Gerard Calvin was also a church leader. During his teen years Calvin went to Paris to study at the College de Marche to prepare for his studies. His studies consisted of seven subjects: grammar, rhetoric, logic, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music. Later in his schooling, Calvin transferred to Montaigu which is a more famous college in Paris. While in college,
Calvin beat out all of the competitors in grammatical studies. In 1527, Calvin switched his mind of becoming a priest and studying faith. At this time Calvin's father advised him to study law rather than theology. His father then advised him to move from Paris to Orleans. . In 1528 Calvin moved to Orleans to study civil law. He soon quickly finished law school and was frequently called upon to lecture. In 1529, Calvin was taught Greek by his friend Wolmar and was introduced to the study of the New Testament in the original language. In 1534, France turned to him for counsel and instruction, attracted not only by his power as a teacher, but because they saw a development of the Christian life according to the evangelical model. When Calvin was 28 years old he moved to Geneva, Switzerland where he would spend the rest of his life. So how did Calvin really change the world? He was deeply convinced in the importance of education especially for the youth. Calvin established schools around Geneva and wanted parents to send their children to study there as he had no faith in education apart from religious training; he drew up a catechism of Christian doctrine which the children had to learn while they were receiving secular instruction. In the august of 1540, Calvin married Idelette de Bure, the widow of Jean Stordeur of Liege, whom Calvin had converted from Anabaptism. They had one child Jacques, who was born on the July 28th 1542, who lived only for a few days. Idelette de Bure passed away in 1549 and never recovered from her loss. Calvin introduced Calvinism, the Protestant theological which develops Luther's doctrine of justification by faith alone and emphasizes the grace of God and the doctrine of predestination.
