Internet Censorship Internet censorship is a very controversial topic because it goes against the First Amendment of the Constitution regarding freedom of speech. People have been debating over how far internet censorship should go, especially in regards to what we allow our children to view on webpages. A law was passed in 2000 called CIPA (Child Internet Protection Act) that required schools receiving certain types of funding or grants to block websites that were obscene, contained child pornography, or were harmful to minors (Wikipedia Contributors, 2011). The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have filed lawsuits in many school districts over this type of censorship because the schools were filtering out websites that talked about lesbians, gays, or bullying (ACLU, 2011). I understand the need for schools to block certain websites because the school becomes liable for what happens to children while they are at school. I think that schools should block certain content from their computers, and the responsibility for what children can look at on-line lies with the parents. As a parent, we are responsible for what children are subjected to in the real world and on the internet. My 12 year-old daughter has her own computer that she can use for homework and fun, but I have installed a parental control that blocks questionable websites from being viewed.
