Internet Censorship: An Annotated Bibliography

LeJeunesse states that there are three reasons that the internet should not have restrictions: no one officially owns the web, freedom of expression, and communication. Since the beginning, the internet was not claimed by anyone and should not be claimed now. The author states that the internet was designed and improved by various people. Reidy suggest that internet censorship is practiced by the government due to sensitive material, data retention, and public information being shared. Sensitive material is anything stored under criminal use (such as child pornography and sharing music illegally), political content, and offensive religious material. In Pakistan, for example, YouTube remains blocked because an anti-Islam video was not removed from the website. Data retention is practiced in authoritarian countries. These countries “would oblige internet service providers to hold information on users web and email usage for 12 months.” (Reidy) These providers hand information to the government as a surveillance on online communication. Holding data back for a large amount of time makes it easy for the government to catch anyone who is willing to go against their country.
