Algebra II Homework – Week 11

1) Note: For the rest of the year, HW will not be following the same pattern it has.
2) Due 2nd Day of CLASS: 5-2
a. Do ALL problems in the Lesson Preview
i. Check answers as you go
b. Watch appropriate HW Video Tutors (found on JupiterGrades)
c. Do the following Exercises (Check answers as you go)
i. 1 to 29, odd ii. 75 to 79, odd
d. Also do the following here:
i. The equation of the parent graph of a parabola is y = x2 (or f(x) = x2). Complete the following T-Chart for the parent graph of a parabola. Use the following x-values to get three points plus a symmetry test: x = 0, x = 1, x = 2, and x = -1: x y
0

1 2 -1 ii. On the coordinate plane below, plot those points and sketch a curve through them (we’ll be doing more with this, so you need not put arrows on the ends of your curve yet):

iii. Since a parabola is symmetry, what is one more point we know should be on the left side of the graph?

iv. Plug x = -2 into the equation y = x2 to make sure you were correct about the above point. (When you do, remember to put -2 in parentheses since you’re squaring -2 NOT just the 2.)

v. Now finish the graph by including the following: First, put arrows on the end of the graph (and not on any points you plotted). These arrows are required. Books use graphing calculators and graphing calculators can’t put arrows on the ends of their graphs. When we draw them by hand, however, arrows are always required to indicate that the graph goes on forever. Also make sure you labeled the x- and y-axes and put at least one number on each axis.

vi. In a new color, draw a new graph by shifting the old one up three units. What is the equation for this new graph?

vii. Below, sketch y = x2 again:

viii. Double all the y-values (but NOT the x-values) and plot the new points above the old points—except for (0,0), which will stay in the same place. ix. You just graphed y = 2x2.
x. If you combined the two graphs above, you’d have a new one that’s stretched by a factor of 2 and shifted 3 units up. What is the equation for that graph?

3) Due next WEEK: 5-3
a. Do ALL problems in the Lesson Preview
i. Check answers as you go
b. Watch appropriate HW Video Tutors
c. Do every other odd of Exercises
i. Check answers as you go
d. Also do the following on graph paper:
i. Make a parent T-Chart for y = x2
1. Make sure you used x = 0, 1, 2, and -1 for your T-Charts (the three points plus symmetry test) ii. Graph your parabola using your 4 points plus another point so everything
