Frequently asked questions: Respecting People and Communities: ANZ’s approach to business and human rights Overview
The following frequently asked questions are guidance for our people on Respecting People and Communities (“Standards”), detailing our approach to human rights. The Standards apply globally across our business. They reflect our ANZ Values and support our efforts to develop a culture of respect in the way we treat our employees, work with our customers and suppliers, and contribute to the communities where we operate. We are embedding the Standards across our business. For example, we have incorporated the Standards into: our occupational health, safety and well-being plans; our social and environmental training programs and lending screening tools; our Supplier Code of Practice and training for Sourcing Category Managers; risk governance systems, in particular through our Group Reputation Risk Committee; and our People policies governing our approach to employee entitlements and benefits.

Introduction to ANZ’s human rights standards
What are ANZ's human rights standards? ANZ understands the important role our business plays in the lives of our employees, our customers and the communities where we operate. We created a set of Standards to clarify our approach to human rights – freedoms and rights all of us are entitled to enjoy. The Standards are aligned to our Values and cover our interactions with employees, customers, communities and business partners such as suppliers. We constantly and consistently strive to improve our culture of respect in the way that we treat each other, work with our customers and suppliers, and contribute to the communities where we operate. Why are they important? Respecting and protecting human rights can help us to achieve our super-regional strategy by helping us to develop more responsible, sustainable relationships with our employees, customers, governments, suppliers and investors. Failing to respect human rights and to adequately manage human rights-related risks can have negative reputational, legal, financial and operational consequences. It is important for all ANZ employees and representatives to understand our approach to human rights. This will help to ensure that we are not associated with adverse human rights impacts whether through our own activities or our business relationships. How were ANZ's human rights standards developed? Our approach to human rights was developed following extensive consultation with people across our organisation as well as external stakeholders. Our Standards align with our Corporate Responsibility Framework, particularly our commitment to grow our business responsibly, and is one of the ways we can all support our Corporate Responsibility priorities as we go about our everyday business.

ANZ invited approximately 150 internal stakeholders in 2009 from the Asia Pacific region to participate in two half-day consultation workshops with business peers, intergovernmental organisations and non-government organisations. The main themes that evolved from this process were the importance of using clear and relevant language across ANZ’s geographic locations, and the importance of highlighting collaboration across the bank. Both these themes are reflected in the Standards. Where can I find the human rights standards on MAX or anz.com? The standards ‘Respecting people and communities’ are available on anz.com in the Corporate Responsibility library as a source of information for our external stakeholders. Do I have to worry about the Standards if I only work in Australia? Yes, the Standards apply wherever we operate. Issues may arise anywhere we live and work and we are committed to a consistent, rights-respecting culture across the organisation. What can I do? Some of the things you can do to respect and promote human rights include: Welcoming and listening to the opinions of others; Encouraging diversity and equal opportunity in our
