Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)

For a very long time humans have tried to modify the agricultural and live stock production by selecting certain characteristics or properties of plants and animals with the objective of improving their production. But before all this men used conventional breeding methods such as selection and crossbreeding in order to improve performance, product quality and adaptability to natural conditions. “Today there are breeding programs which have come a long way obtaining the same goals and using methods such as conventional breeding which means its on the field and modern breeding which takes place in laboratories”(Phillips, T). Also, with the help of biotechnology and genetic engineering genetically modified organisms or also known as GMOs have been developed. A genetically modified organism is an organism whose genetic material are manipulated in laboratories where it has been designed or altered deliberately in order to give a specific characteristic. Many GMOs are genetically modified and artificially created in laboratories by genetic engineers, regardless of species barriers or nature. That is why salmon genes may now be used in tomatoes.
The techniques of genetic engineering are to isolate segments of DNA, (genetic material), to introduce into the genome, (hereditary material), of another. Then the DNA is used in fragments and used to bombard the cells with coated particles of the new DNA, or other physical methods such as electric shock, which allows the DNA, never been able to be between different species such as fish genes in vegetables. Fish genes were once put into tomatoes to make them stronger and it allowed them to be ripe and bright red, also it helped them not rot, spoil, and resist cold weather on their way to the super market. “But the experiment ultimately did not prove successful, and the pursuit of a cold-resistant tomato was abandoned” (PBS). However, the safety of GMOs into the environment is controversial among biotechnology and environmental groups who are against it such as The Organization for Food and Agriculture or OFA.
Genetically modified organisms are “living organisms whose characteristics have been changed using modern techniques in specialized laboratories to introduce genes from other species” (Encyclopedia Britannica). These techniques allow the DNA to be separated, modified, and transferred from a bacteria, virus, plant, animal or human and inserted into another. With the development of genetic engineering they can make different organisms have new features or properties that it never had before. fragments to penetrate to the inner core, through the cell membranes. The practice of genetically modifying species for human use has been in existence since humanity began, but only recently has it been performed in laboratories and not in the fields or growing areas like it used to be. Up until now genetic modification had
You can never know the risks and benefits of these organisms in the environment, all this depends on the modified organism, its new features and the place it is being used, there are problems identified with the use of GMOs such as the growth of organisms in unwanted places. GMOs help farmers a lot by increasing productivity and having quality on their crops, something that has not been proven by the
