Genetically Modified Organisms

Genetically Modified Organisms are designer foods that are commonly used for crop and human consumption using a made up genetic alter of DNA and genes. GMO’s have been commonly used within the food industry and have become a health issue in our world. When the DNA and genes are changed they are inserted to make the product grow quicker or bigger not using the natural cycle of growth. About 60% of foods prepacked in a normal grocery store contain genetically modified foods, but there is not labeling policy in North America today so we do not know what we are completely eating. For example our potatoes could be crossed with a moth gene, or corn and tomatoes with bacteria genes. No one knows for sure what were eating or if its safe I do not agree with genetically modified organisms.

Genetically Modified Organisms are very harmful to the environment. GM crops used herbicides; it can harm birds, insects, amphibians, marine ecosystems, and soil organisms. They slow down bio-diversity, pollute water resources, and are unsustainable. For example, GM crops are ruining habitat for monarch butterflies, and there populations are down 50% in the US. Herbicide showed causes for birth defects in amphibians, embryonic deaths and endocrine disruptions, and organ damage in animals even at very low doses. GMO canola has been found growing wild in North Dakota and California, threatening to pass on its herbicide tolerant genes on to weeds.

Genetic engineering creates dangerous side effects for everyone even when it’s avoided. By mixing genes from totally different species, genetic engineering releases unpredictable side effects. Also the type of genes that are inserted can change the process of creating a GMO plant and can result in massive damage that produces new toxins, allergens, chemicals, and nutritional deficiencies.

The biggest threat caused by this food is that they can have harmful effects on the human body. It is believed that eating and consuming these genetically engineered foods can cause the development of diseases that are immune to
