GCSE ART: SELF HELP BOOKLET

AIM: to act as a guide through the course and help you get the best grade possible.

OUTLINE OF THE COURSE
2 coursework projects
Each project is made up of a final piece of work (e.g. a painting, a print, a piece of pottery etc.) And Research work (sketches, notes, brainstorm, scrapbook etc.)
The 2 projects are:

MASKS (Includes a mock test) 2. STILL LIFE (Includes a mock test)

The final test
(Exam) will be to do one more project (you choose topic from a list). You will be given time to research then 2 days off timetable to do the final piece

YOUR FINAL GCSE GRADE
All of year 10 and the Autumn term of year 11

Spring and summer term of year 11

60 % coursework and 40% final test
Sketchbooks
An essential part of the GCSE course is the use of sketchbooks.
Students need 2 x A3 sketchbooks for coursework (1 for each project).
Subsidised costs of a sketchbook is £1.40 each, plus 1 A4 sketchbook for the controlled test (cost 60p).

GCSE ART ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES

‘Objectives’ are things that we look out for when assessing (marking) your work. You need to make sure you have done as much as is possible to cover the objectives.

MASKS PROJECT CHECKLIST

AIMS:

Respond to art work from other cultures and produce a 3 dimensional outcome, supported by a sketchbook full of work.

Complete an illustrated mind map about masks and their uses. Make it as colourful and interesting as possible.

Complete a page of pattern work taken from examples of masks. Use colour of your choice.

Complete a double page of your sketchbook with collected pictures of masks. Use one of the prepared pages done in lesson to add your pictures to (they can be printouts, photos, photocopies, drawings etc.) Add notes about them.

Produce a good tone drawing self-portrait. Use a spotlight to create a dramatic lighting effect. Use a ½ page in your sketchbook.

Do a close up drawing of your eye in pencil tone and fill a ½ page.

Produce an ‘Arcimboldo’ style portrait made up of objects. Use colour and a whole page.

Collect 4 examples of portraits by recognized artists. Add notes about the artists and their work.

½ page of your sketchbook….. Do ½ a self-portrait in tone and then copy one of your mask pictures for the other half of the face. Use colour on the mask side.

Complete a page of ideas for masks. Divide the page into 6 boxes and do 6 different ideas in colour. Add notes. Each design must show the influence of masks from other cultures.

Enlarge a section from an observational drawing in your sketchbook and complete in a media of your choice.

Design a development sheet. Plan your final piece: design, draw and annotate. Use a whole page.

Complete a written evaluation in your sketchbook. Include a drawing or photo of
