Adoption There are thousands of children in America who are waiting to be adopted. Right now there is a shortage of families and couples who are willing to adopt. However there are gay couples, who want to help reduce that shortage, but face many red flags. Most conservatives believe that gay couples should not be giving the rights to adopt. Some states even have laws that prevent them from adopting. Same sex- couples are just like regular couples; yet it is not easy as regular couples to adopt. Many gay couples still endure criticism, spoken and unspoken, from those who are uncomfortable with the fact of gays being parents. Gay couples should be able to adopt, they should be able to a get a chance at parenting. Gay couple should have the legal right to adopt children because of these four specific reasons.
There are millions of orphans all over the world that need a home and by making gay adoption legal will allow us to help these kids, give them the love they need and want. In a New York article A Child’s Best Interest it said, “ A 2011 report by Arkansas Department of Human Services found 517 children awaiting adoption but only 228 adoption homes are available.” Even if you have a home, pass the background checks, and otherwise meet the state requirements for adoption, you can be turned down by an adoption agency just because you’re in a same sex relationship. Emily Dievendorf is with Equality Michigan stated, there is over 5,000 kids in Michigan’s foster care system at any one time and around 3,000 kids that are eligible for adoption at any one time in Michigan. With a shortage of homes out there should not be blocking off same-sex couples from adopting. These couples would be able to provide the children with a good home, a loving family, and a good environment. At this point this is what is needed for the kids, nothing else should matter. But even after all the stress and obstacles gay couples are put through, the love for their children still remains the same.
Research has shown that the kids of the same-sex couples, both adopted and biological kids fare no worse than the kids of straight couples on mental health, social functioning, school performance and a variety of other life-success measure. Children grow up to be positive emotionally develop and intelligent adults when raised in a stable family situation, rather than institutions. In a 2012 review study on gay parents, New York University sociologist Judith Stacey and University of Southern California sociologist Tim Biblarz found no difference between children raised in homes with two heterosexual parents and children raised with lesbian or gay parents. If same-sex marriage does disadvantage kids in any way, it has nothing to do with their parents’ gender and will be society’s reaction towards the families, which will cause an issue.
Many people think same-sex adoption would be a bad influence or have a bad impact on the kids. Just because of the simple fact that they are deprived of a mother or a father. People are still stuck on the traditional Christian/Catholic image of a lifelong union of man and woman; the assumption that the children will end up being gay just like the parents .Adoption is not about finding children for families is really about families for children. Someone sexual orientation should not have any preference on how they raise a child. Should be more concerned with parents who abuse their children and mistreat them in any way, which can occur to any couple, regardless of who their in a relationship with. In fact children who are raised by gay couples actually turn out well advance in their studies and have more of an open mind about life.
