Army leadership begins with Noncommissioned Officers
All leaders need to provide a reason to the person(s) they are leading. Soldiers require that first a leader shows the ability to lead from the front. This is easier said than done, we must first think about the different aspects. Mental tough, all leaders need to be able to cope with the regress demands the day to day Army life. It can be harsh at times but invest enough time and you will become a great leader. These ties perfectly into being a resilient and flexible person, the example is set by the leader. When you don’t quit, but you bounce back and recover quickly to face whatever comes your way. It is just like a mom or dad who the children look up to. We pick up on a person’s traits, without even knowing we do so. All leaders are more effective if they improve their military bearing, confidence, physical fitness and resilience. Confident, you will be required to make hard decisions in little time, under lots of pressure too. We must project confidence and a calm outward approach to different situations. For example, in front of physical training formations, where you will sometimes be required to do something you have never done before. Military bearing is a direct reflection of a person’s discipline and level of tact. Physical fitness can help you lead soldiers in the right direction though proving them with an example. A reference point that you can use as an example is like stated I earlier, try to lead from the front. Physical fitness requires working with soldiers on a case by case basis, from platoon and section physical fitness and up. Knowing and understanding your soldiers is in the NCO Creed too, “I know my soldiers”, and it goes on to say I will always place their needs above my own.
