Executive Summary: As businesses are growing rapidly in the modern age, they are progressing towards virtualization as a solution to their fast growing IT infrastructure. Hypervisor and ESXi 5.0 are the primary software’s used in Virtualization today. This report will examine the effectiveness of virtualization by looking at various user aspects. The data shown in this research report concludes that virtualization is mostly effective to businesses and does not consist of many disadvantages.
Introduction: This research report evaluates the effectiveness of virtualization in rapidly growing businesses with fast growing IT infrastructure. This data was collaborated by Microsoft who designed the Hyper-Visor software and VMware who designed the ESXi 5.0 software. In the modern age servers are an essential part of running a successful business. Servers are similar to the computers we use in everyday life except they have the capability to process data much faster than computers. Servers play a very crucial role in a rapidly growing business. Before virtualization the purchase of one server could cost a business anywhere between $3,000 to $90,000 dollars. With the help of virtualization businesses can expand much quicker and decrease downtime which in return can benefit the business by saving money. The first efficient virtualization software was released by VMware (ESXi 3.5) on December 31st, 2007. In the race to compete in the business industry Microsoft released their first virtualization software (Hypervisor) on June 26, 2008. In this report, I will be examining the effectiveness of virtualization. To determine the effectiveness of virtualization it must be evaluated in terms of cost effectiveness, user functionality, and consumer acceptance. This research report will primarily focus on the ESXi software which will determine the effectiveness of virtualization by concentrating on the advantages and disadvantages virtualization. Also, this report will include the similarities and differences between physical servers and virtualized servers.
Research Methods: In order to examine the effectiveness of virtualization, the research methods below were executed.
1) To learn about virtualization and how it’s incorporated into an IT infrastructure I focused on the software ESXi 5.0 by VMware. I obtained most of my data through building my own virtual infrastructure and VMware’s website.
2) To measure consumer acceptance I primarily focused on data provided by VMware determining how many companies are looking towards virtualization over the past couple of years.
3) To examine the effectiveness of virtualization I found technical reports and articles by known professionals in businesses.
Results: This section of the research report includes the completed research methods I mentioned in the section above. In the first point, I discussed what virtualization is and how it’s incorporated into a rapidly growing IT infrastructure. The second point includes the user acceptance towards virtualization. The last point determines the effectiveness of virtualization.
Virtualization: Virtualization can be accomplished by downloading a software capable of virtualization on a physical server and managing that software through another computer on the network. The software I will talk about is ESXi 5.0 by VMware. First a business must buy a
