Different schools available within the UK

The following are all schools that are funded by the state. Pupils do not need to pay to attend.

|Community School |These schools are run and owned by the Local Education |
|Primary or Secondary |Authority (LEA). The LEA sets the admission policy and the |
| |school is not influenced by local businesses or religious |
| |groups. |
|Foundation/Trust School |These schools are run by their own governing body which will |
|Primary or Secondary |determine the admission policy in consultation with the LEA. |
| |The school premises and land are owned by the governing body or|
| |a charitable trust. They have more freedom in how they operate |
| |than a community school, they can set their own pay and |
| |conditions and they are free to change term times or the length|
| |of the school day. They do not have to follow the same |
| |curriculum as a community school. |
|Voluntary aided schools |These are mainly religious or faith schools but anyone can |
|Primary or Secondary |apply, regardless of their religion. They are run by a |
| |governing body. Land is usually owned by a religious |
| |organisation or charity. Voluntary aided schools are partly |
| |funded by the governing body, by the LEA and by charity. |
| |Schools follow the national curriculum but if the school is a |
| |faith school then they are free to teach only their chosen |
| |religion. |
|Specialist Schools |The majority of secondary schools are now specialist schools. |
|Secondary |This means they have a chosen speciality which they can offer |
| |to pupils ie. technical colleges |
