Developing Main Points Worksheet

What is the organizational pattern (topical, chronological, spatial, etc.) that you are using for this speech?

I am using topical organizational pattern for my speech.

Using the information from your Purpose and Thesis Worksheet, write down your three main points. Brainstorm the information that you are going to use to support each point underneath.

I. (Main Point #1):

Diagnosis- How someone is diagnosed with Asthma? What tests are needed to test for Asthma? What are the statistics of people with Asthma in the United States? What are the classifications of Asthma?
1. Acute Asthma the airways are relatively normal in between attacks (NMIHI 2012).
Allergens and lung infections are causes of Acute Asthma and Symptoms start to go away after a shorter period of time.
Diagnostic Tests are needed to diagnose Acute Asthma.
Laboratory blood studies are used to identify allergy triggers.
Chest x-rays are used to identify abnormalities, such as infection that can cause or aggravate breathing problems.
Most cases of Asthma occur before the age of 25, but Acute Asthma can occur at any age (NMIHI 2012).
2. Chronic Asthma there is some narrowing of airways continuously, with further narrowing during an acute attack (NMIHI 2012).
Chronic Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airway which causes recurrent breathing problems.
Chronic Asthma is characterized by three airway problems: obstruction, inflammation, and hyper-responsiveness.
Diagnostic tests are needed to diagnose Chronic Asthma.
The first tests doctors use are laboratory blood studies to identify allergy triggers for Asthma.
Secondly, doctors use chest x-rays and CT Scans are used to identify structural abnormalities or diseases that can cause or aggravate breathing problems. After testing a patient’s blood and doing chest x-rays a doctor will then turn to pulmonary function tests.
Spirometry is a pulmonary function test used to estimate the narrowing of bronchial tubes (Mayoclinic 2015).
A peak flow meter is used to measure how hard you can breathe out and is tracked in various ways (Mayoclinic 2015).
Chronic Asthma most commonly is diagnosed in children and adolescences ages 5-17, also in adults older than 65 (BetterMedicine 2015).

II. (Main Point #2):

Signs and Symptoms- What are the most common signs and symptoms of Asthma? What do these signs and symptoms mean? How are these symptoms affecting the patient? How severe can these symptoms get?
Common Asthma signs and symptoms vary from person to person, but here are the most common.
Shortness of breath and chest tightening are the first symptoms of Asthma.
Wheezing upon breathing out can occur, sometimes sounding like a whistling sound as air is forcedly expelled.
Persistent coughing is a big sign of Asthma, especially at night.
Rapid, shallow breathing that is easier with sitting up can be a sign of an Asthma attack coming on.
Some of the more severe symptoms are lips turning
