STUDENT ASSOCIATION MEETING
TUESDAY 2nd DECEMBER 2014

Check the college website for information during snowy weather. If getting to college is too difficult, work will be on Moodle for you to complete. Students should take care when traveling to college and only do so when they feel it is safe.

Well done to White Vinyl, Los Bastardos, Until We Meet and Escape who got through to the final of Battle of the Bands on 18th December. Tickets will be on sale for £2.50 from the Finance Office from 5th December

We raised £389.50 for Children in Need and World AIDS Day raised £79.76 Well Done and thank You all!

Candy Canes will be on sale in aid of MIND Charity, in the Common Room from 8th December

QE Christmas Jumper Day on 17th December. ‘Winter Warmers’ and Christmas biscuits for sale in the Common Room

1. Matters Arising
Bethan gave the students guidance about what to do if the weather becomes particularly wintery. Students were told to:
Assume college was open, unless told otherwise as it rarely closes
To only travel into college if you feel it is safe to do so.
To look for information on the college website and Facebook page, and potentially phone on 01325 461315 from 8am.
Make sure they catch up from any lessons they miss due to bad weather. Teachers will put relevant work onto their subject areas on Moodle.

2. ‘All Aboard’ Competition
Esther spoke about the ‘All Aboard’ Competition, which has been launched by the Transport Minister, Baroness Kramer.
Students aged between 14 and 18 have been invited to come up with ideas to make travelling on buses more accessible for people with visual or hearing problems.
More details are available on the website: www.theallaboardcompetition.co.uk, where students can enter individually or in teams to be in with a chance of winning the £1,000 prize money and a tour of the House of Commons.

3. Darlington Mind Charity- Christine Thompson
Christine Thompson, the Counselling and Support Manager at the local Mind Branch came in to speak to us about what exactly the charity does, and how our money will help people.
She told the students about how the organisation of Mind works, with each individual Mind branch working alone, but being affiliated with the national charity. Mind has been working in Darlington for 35 years, and has grown significantly in that time.
Work the charity undertakes includes:
Providing individuals with a place to live with their Supportive housing scheme. They have 17 residences for people with mental health issues that mean they cannot live alone.
Joint work with West Park Hospital.
Peer Support for individuals with mental health issues to promote their integration into society.
Sport, Art and Music projects that aim to get mental health sufferers to engage in activities to improve their mental state.
