On college campus there are plenty of cases dealing with date rape and date violence. These two components of injury make a huge impact on the student’s safety on campus. Date rape is considered to be a sexual assault by a boyfriend or someone with whom the victim has a dating relationship, is a type of acquaintance rape. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a male victimizing a female, it can also be a female attacking a male, male attacking a male, or a female attacking a female.
In the general population, 1 in 6 women experience rape or attempted rape at some time in their lives, and 1 in 33 men experience attempted rape. Considering those in college, an estimated 20 to 25 percent of college women experience attempted or completed rape during their years in college. Effects can include physical and cognitive distortion, loss of memory, and blackouts. These effects can prevent one’s ability to stop and fight back or say no to the sexual advances if a sexual assault occurs.

Before rape occurs, sexual assault tends to take place. Sexual assault is any sexual behavior that is forced on someone without his or her consent. College males and females both experience sexual assault, but most cases the women are targeted the most.
