Controlling One’s Environment
There are various explanations on how people are learning today as a civilization. One will find that some individuals hold the opinion that children and grown ups learn as a result of their chemical structuring. These same people feel that an individual’s environment has little to no influence on the individual’s ability to learn. Meanwhile, Others feel that many people learn from just the life experiences they face. These people believe that one learns through finding meaning in preponderant events (Piaget, 1950). Throughout this paper well will explore the ideas that one’s; DNA, upbringing, similar and dissimilar experiences, environment, and setting in which one learns has on individuals learning.
The DNA makeup of an individual does have some impact on how we all learn. But to say that ones genomes fully dictates how they will learn is untrue. Yes there are many instances where an individual is born with some kind of learning disability, but that is as far as it goes 99.9% of the time. If that individual is presented with the right aid they will be compelled to learn new things., The fact that the person has a learning disorder does not fully render the person incapable of learning, just means it is going to be apparently harder for the individual to gather and absorb the material. Myself being one of these individuals who have a learning disorder finds it was harder to learn, but I overcame all that which held me back from learning.
“Children learn as a result of the input their brains receive from their senses. What they learn is a reflection of the frequency, intensity, and duration with which their brains receive specific input. We may be able to make a child stay in one place for an extended period of time (duration) while we go over and over the material (frequency), but the child has control over the intensity of the input. The child can be turned on or off. If turned on, the child learns rapidly; if turned off, learning may never occur” (Robert & Doman , 1986).
This tells us how a child learns when information is given to them, yes if the child has a learning disorder this process would be harder, but the child still has the ability to decide if he/she hungers to learn. The will of an individual is often the determining factor in learning.
We are all a creation of upbringings. The way person traps information in a way they will be able to learn is different from country to country or even upbringing to upbringing. Some of the things that would be considered ok to do in one country could vary well be considered bad in another. In most Asian countries leaning is very structured and monitored. This style of teaching denies the students from expressing their thoughts and opinions, which in turns drives the students to discouragement in their works. Furthermore, most parents or teachers have strict rules to govern the way the children learn. Nevertheless, in the States learning takes place in a less controlled environment. Guardians, instructors and other gurus allow adolescents time to participate actively in the learning process. One has to understand that some or most of the basics that facilitate growth/learning may be given in one; Region, country, environment, but might still lack in another. For instance topics gyrating around linguistic, arithmetic and logic largely depend on one’s upbringing. Undeniable places may not place too much emphasis on the development of their linguistic skills, for instance, in Myanmar; researchers have found that certain tribes had no written account of their languages. Such individuals limited by their environments experience fewer experiences than an individual not hindered by their environment. (Jonassen et al, 2002)
